Our Story & Mission

Hunter Wray founded Encompass Marine Surveying to give boat owners and buyers across coastal Virginia something that's surprisingly hard to find: a clear, independent read on the vessels they're trusting with their money and their safety.

Hunter brings 25 years in the marine industry to every inspection. He has served as both captain and chief engineer aboard a large private motoryacht — logging more than 140,000 nautical miles at sea — as well as a marine project manager, giving him a rare, first-hand view of a boat from the helm, the engine room, and the yard alike. He holds a USCG 200-ton Master (Captain's) license and is credentialed through the ABYC and ACMS. An Air Force combat veteran, Hunter carries that same discipline and attention to detail into every survey he performs.

Based in Virginia Beach, he personally conducts each survey from first inspection to final report, covering the whole boat — hull and structural condition, mechanical and electrical systems, plumbing, and electronics. Every report comes back in plain language, not jargon, so you know exactly what you're buying, insuring, or maintaining — and can make your next move with confidence.
